They go by different names, the smaller generally known as sailaus. Most are still constructed by hewing out trees by hand. Small canoes will be made from one tree trunk hollowed out. Dobu Island is one of the smaller of the D'Entrecasteaux Islands in Milne Bay Province, Papua New Guinea. At the last published census, somewhere around 10,000 people lived on or around Dobu, but that was 40 years ago so the number may be twice that now.
