The word, orangutan comes from the malay words 'orang hutan' meaning 'forest men'. At over 30 years old Bugang (meaning 'The Batchelor') is old, typically wild orangutans will life for 35-40 years. Mature males weigh around 75kg and possess large, fleshy cheekpads (or flanges). In Bornean orangutans these have a distinctive forwards curve to them. Bugang lives on one of the artificial islands created at Samboja Lodge, within Samboja Lestari tropical forest restoration and orangutan rehabilitation programe, East Kalimantan, Borneo. Bugang is too old to be successfully released to the wild, so lives on one of the specially created islands in a natural environment. The lodge and programes are run by the Borneo Orangutan Survival Fountation (BOS). BOS is a global organisation dedicated to the protection and restoration of tropical rainforest and the survival of orangutans. Ten percent of profit from any sales of this print will be donated to BOS. You can read more about orangutans and Samboja in my blog here.
Open Edition Fine Art Print
Open edition means that there is no fixed limit to the number of prints I will produce. This should not be confused with high volume, mass produced prints that one can buy on the high street or through large online companies. Here, each print is individually produced, generally using far superior materials and printing process.
Print Size
The print is available as a 42 x 28 cm (16.5 x 11 inch) print size. This is the edge to edge size of the image (rounded to the nearest centimeter or half inch).
The Paper
The prints are produced on Canson Infinity Baryta 310gsm paper or Iford Gallerie Gold Fibre Silk Baryta 310gsm paper (other papers are available). Baryta papers have revolutionised modern digital-age printing by restoring the level of detail, deep blacks, vivid whites and wide colour range previously only available using traditional darkroom photographic paper. I specifically chose this paper because of its exceptional ability to faithfully replicate colour and vividness, its great longevity and its barium sulphate coating. This aids capture of intricate details and definition in the print, has excellent archival qualities and helps in replicating the look of traditional darkroom prints.
