The story behind the image

I took this photograph in the shallows of Elsehul, a small bay at the northern end of South Georgia. A bull Antarctic fur seal cruising along the shoreline, raised its body out of the sea and shook itself vigorously, sending water spraying in all directions. South Georgia is a wild and remote island in the South Atlantic Ocean, mountainous and uninhabited apart from a scattering of scientific bases.Elsehul was used used as a land base for sealers in the 18th and 19th centuries, and remnants of their operations, such as rusting trypots that were used to boil seal blubber to extract oil, can still be seen on the beaches. Antarctic fur seals are one of the great wildlife success stories of recent decades. Hunted almost to extinction just over 100 years ago, their numbers have bounced back with incredible speed. South Georgia, once the centre of the fur seal trade, is the centre of the recovery. Current estimates suggest between 4 and 6 million fur seals, around 95% of the total population, breed on South Georgia.

The photograph was taken using a Nikon full-frame camera coupled with a 400mm Nikon lens.

The Prints.

I've limited the run of prints of this image at this size to 75.

The full size is 96 x 58cm (37.8 x 23") including a 2" white border (3" at bottom), so image size is approx. 92 x 52".

It is produced on Canson Infinity Baryta 310gsm paper. I specifically chose this paper because of its exceptional ability to faithfully replicate colour and vividness, its great longevity and its barium sulphate coating. This aids capture of intricate details and definition in the print, has excellent archival qualities and helps in replicating the look of traditional darkroom prints. A black lacquered wooden frame and 3mm acrylic glass protect the picture.

Signature, Limited Edition Label and Certificate of Authenticity

Each print comes with a unique, micro-embossed, Limited Edition Label signed by me. This is attached on the reverse of the picture, with details of the print method, print size, unique ID, date of print and number in edition run. The print also comes with a separate Certificate of Authenticity which contains all the label information plus a thumbnail image of the print, a unique, traceable, certificate ID, and further information about the artwork and myself.
