Studies have indicated that this reddish colouration comes primarily from iron oxides and hydroxides within seabed sediments. Seals feeding in soft sediment seabeds rich in oxides and monosulfides pick up particles which adhere strongly to individual hairs. Studies have indicated that this reddish colouration comes primarily from iron oxides and hydroxides within seabed sediments. Seals feeding in soft sediment seabeds rich in oxides and monosulfides pick up particles which adhere strongly to individual hairs.
