| Fishing canoe, or pirogue, Senegal. Local artisanal fishermen work many miles offshore in small wooden open boats. These boats are powered by ancient outboard engines. The fishermen here are hand lining for small fish. bait and catch are kept in an ice box in the middle of the vessel; the men will often stay at sea for several days, sleep in the bottom of the boat. Most have no lights, radios, mobile phones, compass or navigation equipment. being run down by trawlers at night is an occupational hazard. Artisanal fishing is a major source of employment in west africa. | |||
