Ocean sunfish, Mola mola, basking close to the surface.
Picture shows eyes, mouth, dorsal and anal fin clearly visible as is
complete absence of tail (caudal) fin. The ocean sunfish is believed
to be the heaviest bony fish (Osteichthyes), with one individual weighing
2235kg (4927lb) recorded. It can grow up to 3 metres (10ft) in length.
Ocean sunfish also hold the record for the maximum number of eggs produced
by a vertebrate animal, a medium sized female may carry 300 million
eggs in her ovary. Sunfish feed primarily on jellyfish, salps and planktonic
animals. Image taken South Devon, UK.
