A young porbeagle shark, Lamna nasus, caught as bycatch, on the deck of a fishing vessel, Irish Sea, UK. Porbeagles are considered vulnerable throughout most of their range. The North-east Atlantic sub-population, to which this one belonged, is considered critically endangered by the IUCN as is the Mediterranean sub-population. This criteria is used for species considered in The North-west Atlantic population is considered endangered. Overfishing is considered the main threat to this species. Accidental catches, as bycatch, especially by nets and long-liners, is also a significant threat to porbeagles. NOAA considers this porbeagle sharks a depleted species and has dramatically reduced commercial quotas. So threatened is the North-eastern population considered that the European Union has proposed a Total Allowable catch (TAC) of zero for 2010. The International Council for Exploration of the Seas (ICES) has also been calling for a complete ban on landings of NE Atlantic porbeagles. The current EU quota (2009) is 436 tonnes, with the greatest allocations being to France and Spain (238 tonnes and 131 tonnes respectively). The IUCN suggests that the NE Atlantic population has declined by around 90% of estimated unexploited stock. Information dated November 2009. |

Colin Munro Photography, marine, underwater and commercial photography, advertising, surf photography, yacht photography, ship photography, design photography, portrait photography, fine art photography, band and music photography, artist and promotional photography, event photography, stock photography. Photographer based in Exeter, Devon, Southwest UK, working Worldwide. Colin has been an underwater photographer for over 20 years and a professional diver and dive supervisor for over 30. Although specialising in underwater photography Colin also undertakes a considerable amount of topside marine photography, including advertsing photography of yachts, fishing vessels, watersports and watersports equipment. Working with high end digital cameras in underwater housings allows him to work in fairly hostile environments (to cameras at least) such as surf zones and at the water-air interface producing low POV shots and half above half below the waterline shots for added dramatic effects. Colin is equally at home working in tank or pool environments, producing dramatic images for advertising or commercial use - be it models or products in an underwater environment. With over a thousand dives logged in all environments Colin is happy organising shoots in pretty much most underwater environments, from deep reefs to under waterfalls. Always up for a challenge, if you have a novel concept for an underwater shoot and want to discuss the practicalities, then come and talk to me.
