| About this image. I took this picture on a bitter winter's day on Dartmoor, late in the afternoon. The sun was very low on the horizon and light was fading fast. The spray from the river had been hitting low-hanging branches all through the previous night and following day, freezing on contact. A fantasy World of delicate icicles had been created. It was an ephemeral World however, and was unlikely to be there tomorrow. I had to get the picture with what little light was left, or not at all. I also needed to get into the middle of the river to get the best angle of view. Hopping from rock to rock with my camera and tripod in one hand, I felt sure I was courting disaster. As the sun started to set I found two small boulders I could balance the tripod across. The picture was taken using Fuji Velvia 50. I love the deep saturated colours it produces; but it is a slow slide film and quite unforgiving in low light conditions. I stablised the tripod as best I could and attached a cable shutter release whilst trying to keep my boots from slipping into the river as I straddled two boulders. I had time for only three frames before the light faded almost completely. I hopped back to the bank miraculously keeping the camera dry but alas not my feet. I chilly trudge through several miles of snow in the twilight followed. When the film was developed I had no doubt it was worth it. | ||||||||||||
